Finger Sores
A MyLupusTeam Member asked a question 💭

‪for a few years i have had these cut things around my finger nails on multiple fingers on both hands, and i always wondered why because i don’t pick at my fingers.‬ ‪i just found out this kind of thing happens in people who have Lupus.‬ has this ever happened to anyone else?

Hi
Cuts on my fingers was a first and long term symptom for me. I saw 2 different dermatologists over about 8-10 years. Each kept giving me creams and i got no relief. One called it Mechanic rash.
I finally saw a different dermatologist who on first site said that this was caused by 'systemic' issues. He is also an Immunologist. I was so lucky as only a few of them in the world at that time.
He put me on a very low dosage (100 mg) of cyclosporin and i have had perfect skin on my hands since that time. Do not let other doctors tell you it will hurt your kidneys. For some reason that is out there in the medical community and this is given in larger doses to transplant patients so they would not do so if it hurt the kidneys. Besides, my kidney function is always monitored due to having lupus.
I have taken this med for about 8 years. A side effect can be unwanted hair growth tho.
I am grateful that i found this doctor and sympathize with you. It is not nice or healthy to have cuts on your fingers.
Best of luck!

Yes. The ones that hurt the most go from my fingertips down to the nail bed. They are very deep and very painful. When I get them it takes weeks to heal. I usually have to bandage them closed to keep the edges together.

My thumbs look exactly like that right now. Send to happen every few months then clears up again. Just part of the fun of having lupus!

The finger nail problems I’ve usually seen in lupus are more along the nail bed rather than the side of the finger. That’s not to say other weird things don’t happen but when a rheumatologist checks your fingers they’re looking for evidence of inflammation and broken vessels coming from the bed. They’ll be red and puffy and raw, so they can have tissue damage but they’re caused from the stretched and swollen skin and circulation issues
