I took cytoxan infusion but they didnt work and made scaring on my kidneys. So ut made my disease worse actually... my drs were baffled
Hi Lachelle, Have you had a kidney biopsy? I had Cytoxan on two different occasions for lupus nephritis. It is help to stop the progression of my kidney disease. You have to treat before the scarring occurs because once the kidneys are scarred there is no reversing the damage. If there is only inflammation the kidney function can be preserved. You have to treat the kidneys aggressively and the research when I had it show that cytoxan was the better drug of choice over prednisone.
I do not know now what the research shows in regards to Cytoxan vs. Cell cept. You may want to research that and ask you rheumatologist about that.
Side effects from the cytoxan are nausea, low blood counts, low energy. I did lose my hair when I underwent a protocol in Germany that was more aggressive than what was performed here in the US. That was 20 years ago and is no longer being done. You may want to contact John Hopkins and see what they are doing in the treatment of lupus nephritis. Prednisone has bad long term side effects that you need to be mindful of as well. . . osteoporosis, avascular necrosis, weight gain just to name a few.
My kidneys are functioning normally now and 20 years ago I had stage IV kidney disease.
I wish you all the best.
