What number of sunscreen is recommended? Often should you apply? One more question, do you still get your dose of vitamin D with sunscreen? Or does it completely block it out?
I was told 50 plus for the best protection, you still have to limit your time in the sun.The sunscreen should be worn all year round, even on cloudy days.
@A MyLupusTeam Member, Any sunblock has to be reapplied every 2-3 hours or maximum protection. Most UVA +UVB sunblocks do not allow the production of Vitamin D3. Vitamin D3 is relatively inexpensive. You may want to have your rheumy check your blood level of Vitamin D3. We lupies are notoriously low in D3 levels. I take 4,000 IUs, twice a day. My blood vitamin D3 levels are just barely normal at this dose. Your rheumy should know what to prescribe for you.
Tom :)
I use Neutrogena as well and stay out of sun during peek hours especially. Unfortunately protecting myself that way caused a severe vitamin D2 deficiency requiring me to take 2000 mg of Vitamin D a day plus another 50,000 IU prescription vitamin D once a week. Doing that for 3 months I am a little better. Its a viscious cycle.
My dermatologist recommended at least 50 too. Your docs can check your vitamin D levels & give you a supplement if it is low. They make protective clothing too.
Neutrogena dry touch spf 110 for face, cotton 45 tinted for face and eyea, Copper tone 70 for body. I wear on my face neck and ears every day. If I am in the sun I use everywhere or wear my spf clothes.
