Imuran

Imuran

Hey guys. I'd like some feedback from those of you that are currently taking Imuran. Any side effects ? Is it better than Prednisone?

Thanks in advance. I haven't started it yet but I will soon and I want to be prepared !

I don't have any problems with the imuran I do have problems with my stomach being bloated all the time not sure if that's from my bad eating habits or the meds. The Steriods is where my problems come in, I have all the side effects the moon face, water weight, eating all the time and sometimes my legs ache.

Dependent on the severity of your lupus activity, my UCLA rheumy had me on Cellcept and Prednisone. Imuran was commonly used for lupus esp for woman of birthing age. My doctor changed to Cellcept a long time ago bc it works better overall in keeping the immune system in check. You must not get pregnant on Cellcept as is causes birth defects. Should you want to get pregnant you need to be off of Cellcept for at least 6 months. My experience:

Prednisone: I don't do well with it, I do better with Medrol but am back on Prednisone bc of my kidney transplant. Trying to go back to Medrol.

Cellcept: As with all Rx, there are side effects. This causes tummy issues, varies if you used Cellcept or its generic. For the most part, no issues with 1500 mg or less. When I was on 3000 mg I got shingles 3 times. But the benefits outweighed the side effects for me. It can also cause hair growth.

Imuran: on it briefly post transplant and caused hair loss. But other than that, it was fine. Doctor still believes Cellcept works better than Imuran so she switched me back.

In the end, I gave the meds a try to see what would really work for me since everyone is so different.

Best of luck!

Right now I'm taking both at the same time because I have a lot of inflammation. So I will take the prednisone for awhile then tapering off of it an when the inflammation returns I have to restart the prednisone.
The Imuran is a constant daily medication to control the lupus an hopefully stop if from attacking other organs an progressing
