I had labs done which led to negative ANA, but positive for the Smith IgG and RNP IgG antibodies borderline positive DNA double stranded antibody. My rheumatologist says it means nothing should I be worried? I have discoid lupus but I experience joint pain and swelling, fatigue, headaches, and frequent chest pain not to mention the breakouts on my arms, legs, feet, and scalp. This is getting to be frustrating and I feel like I'm not really being listened to. Is anyone familiar with negative ANA… read more

Get a second opinion. It is your right. Doctors are not infallible. Keep advocating for yourself until someone listens. Do it as soon as you do some research and find an experienced rheumy.

@A MyLupusTeam Member yes I am familiar with a negative ANA. My doctor said that they use like a point check system. If you have 7 out of 10 check points then you have lupus. With me my ANA is negative when my pain is the worst. When my pain is minimal then my ANA is positive. With my case when it is attacking my joints, muscles, back and everything else that can cause me pain my ANA is negative. But when I feel good and my pain is minimal then my ANA is positive. That's when it is attacking my kidneys, lungs and heart. That's the weirdest thing to me. But every case is different. It affects everyone differently. So get another opinion. And learn it's pattern of attack on you. Yes that's hard to do because it is a unpredictable disease and it does what it wants. It set up new doorways for other alignments. I've been learning it's pattern for me so I can try to stay on top of the flares so I can have less. You have to try to learn it's pattern for you. Find a good doctor that will keep a check on the ANA so you can compare it to how you feel. I hope that helped.

That is so true because only you and only you know your own body no one else as the right to tell you what to take or not to unless you are happy or comfortable too do it. I have had to change my Rheumatologist and about 10 Doctors because they thought because they have a Medical Degree they know everything but to be honest they do not and I have proved some Medical Professionals wrong even though they do not like me but who cares.

Me too its like once they see negative for the Ana they Dont look at anything else. I have joint pain back pain stomach headaches my knees hurt the worst. Sometimes I stand up and my legs just go out they're wobbling like a newborn deer. But when I saw those labs and looked back over my last 4 labs the results are up and down over a year and they just ignore that.that made me research negative Ana lupus I always get inflammation in my lungs and I just knew in my heart something isn't right. Hopefully the second opinion is more open and listens more
