Members responded with a lot of solidarity to the question about tight jaw muscles, sharing that conditions like TMJ, arthritis, Sjogren's, trigeminal nerve inflammation, and lupus-related neurological issues may all play a role. Several members suggested practical remedies including Botox injections for joint pain, mouth guards for teeth grinding, ibuprofen, and over-the-counter Benzodent products to ease mouth pain and increase saliva. A recurring theme was the importance of speaking with a rheumatologist or dentist to identify the cause and find relief.

Hi @A MyLupusTeam Member,

Tough question. Lots of possibilities. You should speak with your doctor and dentist. Maybe something as simple as a mouth appliance for sleeping. Maybe you grind your teeth. Not good. Arthritis and TMJ as others suggested. It could also be an inflamed cranial nerve, either your facial or trigeminal nerve. Lupus can cause a spectrum of neurological problems.

Be well,

Tom

Yes. TMJ is very common. I actually get Botox injections around the joints to help with the pain.

Tell your rheumatologist. Sjorgens can cause the pallette and mouth to hurt like you've been chewing on a dog bone for hours. Benzene makes grear otc products that ease pain and increase saliva.
