I am in the process of being diagnosed with Lupus. My mother has it (in nursing home now), and two of her Aunts did as well. My kidney and liver functions are off, but my ANA test, Anti-dsDNA test, Rheumatoid Arthritis, and Sjogren's test were negative. I have a VERY prominent butterfly rash on my face, ache all over, sometimes slight fever, extremely sensitive to sunlight, lots of hair loss, puffy hands and ankles (just to name a few). I keep hearing about a test, C3, C4, .. and also Anti-SM… read more
You need to see a rheumatologist so they can run blood work for sedation,c3,c4,creatine protein. Plus run a full auto immune panel on u. My ANA was negative and so was the double strand DNA. I have all lupus symtoms. I was in the hospital 24 days. They diagnosed me with SLE lupus 10/ 2016
There are plenty of Rheumatoligists who dx without + ANA. While it's true that "most" with lupus have +ANA, some simply do not. When I started this journey, mine was negative. I walked away feeling like I was a hypochondriac. Really demoralizing and humiliating. After having some severe allergic reactions (totally random) I went to an allergist who dx me without ANY labs... (We did the labs anyway, but said he was sure) and guess what... + ANA. All of the sudden, Drs took me seriously. It sucked that I needed that to be respected... Well, next major flare landed me in the hospital and guess what- negative ANA. I felt like a crazy person. My then rheum explained it can change all of the time. Just find a good doctor who won't give up. Find someone willing to treat with different meds to see how you respond and be open to other possible dx. Don't give up until you feel satisfied with the answers. Good luck and stay strong!
I was diagnosed with lupus last week. Negative ANA and negative DS-DNA. My c3 and c4 were low and I had several symptoms so my doctor diagnosed me anyway.
Yes. But please remember... your goal should be to find someone who doesn't have an issue making a lupus dx without the bloodwork. It's called seronegative SLE.
I don't have much time right now, but I found a few papers that explain. Hope this helps.

I was diagnosed with only pos ANA and C4 levels off. (Plus symptomatic) but it was plenty for my doc and all of the others since. Be persistent and just be direct. Tell them you WANT the diagnosis so you can move on with your life.
