Anyone else anemic?

I've always had anemia. But I don't have it really bad but I do find myself constantly eating and chewing ice !! And I really do not wanna take another pill! A) I already take more than enough and B) iron pills cause me constipation . So my moms been making food that are high in iron like beans, lentil soup and cow liver. But what else can I do? And is this caused by the lupus as well ?

wow, @A MyLupusTeam Member, did your mother have lupus so you got it from birth? I read that if a lupus sufferer has a baby they can be born with lupus 'but it generally goes away.' So maybe you were one of those who found it never went away. I am so sorry you were born with it, no child should suffer this type of pain.

When I had anaemia very badly I was told it was a B12 deficiency. So I was told to eat eggs and mushrooms (harder for vegetarians to find sources of B12.) At the moment I have an iron deficiency so I am taking a liquid supplement plus I have done some research on it. whatever iron source you are having, you need to take Vitamin C with it to help absorption apparently. A small supplement of zinc assists too. If taking an oral iron supplement you need to not be taking antacids or H2 blockers such as Tagamet (I take mine 2 hours after my dinner meds so it is ok to have the Tagamet at dinner and the supplement 2 hours later.) I have a list of vegetarian foods containing iron and could paste in the top ones if you need it (or just google it!)

I use black strap molasses - 1 tablespoon in hot water makes a sort of "coffee." Get unsulphured blackstrap. It's full of iron.
