Can lupus cause your throat to keep swelling up? I can hardly swallow because it hurts so much. I don't want to blame lupus for everything but, this keeps happening.

@A MyLupusTeam Member i do not want to sound condescending, we all have knowledge, depending on our experiences, may i help by suggesting you look up a chart of your lymph glands, you will see the tonsils and adenoids and the lymph glands under your neck, ears, arm pits and groin in particular are the sites with your immune system calls on the various fighters of virus, bacteria and fungus, as these are their battlegrounds for your whole body feeling the sighs of general unwellness. In the case of systemic Lupus flares, likewise the lymph glands are of particular interest to note when you notice something is not right. certain lymph glands in the neck, below ears, and tonsils if particularly inflamed may indicate an infection nearby like an ear infection or a Strep throat infection specifically, most likely will respond to anti-biotic treatment. However if viral origin not so, and more a systemic 'flu like' generalised aches and pain's as we often recognise when we are having a Lupie flare. All the very best Irene. get back to us with your white blood count topic of interest and concern. Warm regards, Margaret

Yes it's happened to me. Doctors couldn't figure out if it was an allergic reaction or lupus. Increased my predisone for a week & I was okay. Never happened again. You should go to a walk in or er and have them check you so it doesn't get worse.

Lupus has caused me to have strong allergic reactions that sometimes cause my throat to feel like that. Antihistamines help.

I think that might have to do with our lupus because that usually happens to me and when i get rest I feel better afterwards like swallowing is unbearable it feels like my tonsils or my throat in general is inflammed @A MyLupusTeam Member

Lupus can cause you to get streptococcal pharyngitis (strep throat) or laryngeal inflammation (laryngitis) a lot because it causes you to get GERD aka acid reflux which causes you to puke a lot which can cause the throat to become swore and swollen due to the acid which makes it impossible to swallow anything which sucks a lot.
