I know that sounds weird but has anyone had any problems with their tongue swelling up. One of my worst symptoms aside from joint pain is the mouth ulcers but this time my tongue is completely swollen! Any experience with this?

I realize this is a question from some time ago but just wanted to weigh in. I’m awaiting my rheum appointment for possible lupus. My tongue is a constant problem, often swollen to the point of scalloping where my teeth make indentations. It is also often painful even when not that large and many foods, spices, mints cause a great deal of pain. I even have an issue with toothpaste 😩

I just went thru all the checks for thyroid which often cause this. Tho I have thyroid antibodies, my thyroid functions are fine so my symptoms are completely unrelated claims the endocrinologist.

I also had extensive allergy testing both prick and blood. I’m only allergic to cats and since I’m not eating them (ha!) that’s not the cause of my tongue swelling either.

I’ve had some mouth ulcers too. I thought it was because of extensive dental work I had done but now it seems like it was a flare due to the STRESS of the dental work. I also have nose sores.

At this point I’m thinking the swelling is related to Lupus or other autoimmune related disease.

I wish you luck. This might seem like a non problem to others but it is terribly inconvenient and painful and sure does effect quality of life

Yes I have had swollen tongue and swollen lips . I have an epi pen in case I am allergic to something ( probably myself:) as my tongue can swell over night while sleeping when I haven't had anything to eat or drink . It is delayed not after I have eaten anything which makes me think it's myself . While know more once I see the specialist from the allergy clinic

I do have dry mouth and eyes. I’m still not sure if its allergy related or autoimmune related somehow. We’re treating me for sinus issues now (testing, scans, meds) and nothing is helping. I am thinking the severe swelling of my passages is not allergy related but inflammation from my possible lupus.

I’ve lost nearly all my teeth in the last 10yrs. It’s been tragic and painful. I clench my teeth terribly when sleeping, I believe the loss is related to that but no one knows. My teeth were rotting from the inside outside out, literally. They’d look beautiful and then *snap* one would break and show a huge cavity had formed inside. I developed several different abscesses as well 😔 My recent work was to replace teeth I lost and/or pulled. I’m only about 1/3 if the way done but it was so painful I can’t work up the courage to go back! The sores I had and the burning! I couldn’t eat for over 2 weeks

The decline in my teeth does correspond to when I started experiencing bodily pain and swelling btw. Hummm....?

And yes, my tongue never feels clean. It’s always coated and grimy and rough, which makes it very hard to brush well.

My density suggested “sensitive tongue” syndrome. I’ve never heard of it. I’ve read some about geographic tongue but I’m not sure if that applies to me. I just read elsewhere on the site that someone had the hairy tongue and it was caused by her anti-malarial drug.

I will say it was the swelling of my tongue that set off the red flags to an Urgent Care doctor earlier this month. It was so big I went in for it to get documented. He asked about Lupus and sent me to an allergist asap. I saw the allergist..she suggested lupus and sent me to the rheumatologist. So I’m beginning to think some consider the swollen tongue to be sign of Lupus.

Wish I had more info! If I ever learn anything more I will gladly share

I get the mouth and nose ulcers but not tongue swelling, sounds like an allergic reaction. Call dr
