Hi All, it's been a little while since I've been on here. I'm sure there are posts about this somewhere but I can't seem to find them.

I take only 200mg of hydroxychloroquine daily (supposed to up to 300 next refill). For the past few weeks I've been getting these new real sharp/pressure like pains behind either eye on and off. I realize the risk of retinal damage is about 1 in 5,000 for those on high dosages for years, but being paranoid, I thought I'd better be safe than sorry and I just… read more

That’s always the million dollar question with autoimmune disease, a bit frustrating isn’t it !?
Is it this or is it that, what was the cause. It seems like there’s a very strong correlation between you stopping the meds and having a flare, I believe with autoimmune disease the flare can happen that quickly, however you are correct it would take quite a while for all of the plaqunil to exit your system, this makes restarting plaque when L much better than initially starting it. However, with a sudden absence of the drug you’re a cute high blood levels from the daily pills so to speak do drop immediately. There are many studies online, and some really great studies that were done in Europe on plaqunil. It is also the drug of choice for auto immune throughout Europe. They are very large studies and they basically show that when people stop the drug their future incidence of severe complications from auto immune disease are quite increased. I read these studies because I wanted to stop my plaqunil and I was convinced to continue. The incidence of retinal toxicity is extremely rare, but however I do see your ophthalmologist as soon as possible for a dilated eye exam and a visual field test. From what I know and what my doctors told me, I would have great qualms about going up to 300, sometimes this is a short term initial dose, but I’ve never heard of it being a long term or permanent dose. Something to discuss with your doctor! Best of luck to you and most importantly I hope you’re through this flare and feeling better soon. God bless you always 💗🌺🥰🙏🏼❤️

- Risk of Lupus Flares: Stopping hydroxychloroquine suddenly can increase the risk of lupus flares. One study found that those who stopped taking the medication were 61% more likely to experience a flare sooner than those who continued their medication.
- Side Effects and Vision Issues: If you experience uncomfortable side effects or vision changes, consult your doctor. They can help adjust your dose or switch you to a different medication.
- Tapering Off: It's safer to slowly decrease your dose over time with guidance from a healthcare professional rather than stopping cold turkey.

Always consult your doctor before making any changes to your medication regimen.
