Have had a significant amount of symptoms, finally got tested. results were positive. NP is sending me for a rheumatology referral but cant see rheumatologist till dec. NP says most likely Lupus... Have tried asking on other forums, groups. felt kind of dismissed by people saying that 1:40 was insignificant but my labs flagged them as positive and high. I am confused and feel like i dont even belong in these groups now.

They keep saying its low because it is low, not because they are trying to insult you or dismiss you. It’s just a medical fact. There’s a lot about ANA online that you can read about to better understand your results.

Many rheumatologists don’t put too much stake in ANA til it hits 1:160 or higher since lower titers of ANA are found in a significant number of perfectly healthy people and even higher titers aren’t disease specific.

32% of healthy people (1/3 of the population) will have an ANA of 1:40 https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/9324014/

ANA does not = Lupus or even autoimmune disease. True, if a positive ANA shows up in lab results it is usually a launching point to do other tests but the low positive ANA means very little on its own. A significantly positive ANA is 1:320 or 1:640 and a strong positive gets up to 1:1280 and higher!

A “pattern” just means that they take a look at your sample under the microscope and try to best describe what they see. It isn’t any better or worse that your ANA had a pattern, they all do. Many rheumatologists don’t take patterns into consideration because the results are often flawed and inconsistent. 3 different lab techs can have 3 different answers and the computer analysis is unreliable. So far I’ve had every pattern of ANA except for speckled 🤷‍♀️

Your CRP is 5. Tho it can differ by lab it is usually considered abnormal when it is over 10mg. CRP is an inflammation marker and it can be raised for a number of reasons including infection or even gum disease. A high CRP can be in the 100s. Here is a little outline of CRP https://www.healthline.com/health/rheumatoid-ar...

Butterfly rashes are one of the most confusing things about lupus. There are many face rashes but the lupus rash is very very specific. You can have something that for all the world looks like a lupus butterfly rash but isn’t. It is a source of frustration for many people.

The quickest way for you to get answers is probably through a dermatologist. If your rash is always visible they will be able to do a biopsy of a small skin sample. A true lupus rash will have specific inflammation markers visible during a biopsy and get you a diagnosis quickly.

Many people here are in the same position you are! Lots of people here have no answers but are unwell and looking for support. You belong here as much as anyone else. But please understand people here are trying to share accurate info. And it’s important we do so we are better informed and can make better decisions about our care. Please don’t take it personally if the answers you get aren’t exactly what you hoped to hear.

You got a referral to a rheumatologist which is exactly who you need to see to get answers and Dec is right around the corner!

That is a very low titer ANA. Many labs and most doctors don’t consider it positive unless the titer is 1:80 and above since many perfectly healthy people will have a 1:40 ANA result.

ANA can be positive with autoimmune issues, infections, cancer or thyroid issues and for no reason at all. They don’t seem to understand it well

That said, you say you have some symptoms of autoimmune disease so it’s a good thing you’ve been referred to a rheumatologist. I don’t see anything in your test results that stand out as being particularly Lupus related but the really high platelets and alk phosphate mean something.

Good luck finding answers and relief
