APS & ORAL SURGERY

A MyLupusTeam Member asked a question πŸ’

I have APS/LUPUS and found out that I also suffer with TMJ. I am in need of oral surgery including an extraction. My dentist wants me off ELIQUIS for a couple of days prior to. My hematologist gave me a box of lovenox and told me to stop my eliquis and take the lovenox 4 days before the procedure. I have NEVER TAKEN lovenox and wanted to know has anyone had to stop one blood thinner and temporarily take another ; so that you can have a medical procedure done?

Yes in years past. Lovenox ( low molecular weight Heparin) is a good option because it 1) gets out of your system quickly 2) has a fast antidote available. They often use it in the hospital, and it has been around for years.

Yes it is a common practice. They want to make sure you don't bleed out.

I was on daily shots of blood thinner & had to have exploratory surgery, I only had to skip the morning of my surgery. I am off of all blood thinner, though I have a small PE in my right lung which seems to be shrinking, however I should probably be on a daily blood thinner.

Blake3 thanks for taking time to share your experience. However you casually mentioned that you are NO LONGER on any blood thinners, but you have a PE?!!! I think maybe you should see your PULMONOLOGIST soon. I had 3 blood clots 2years ago...And the PE obstructed blood getting to my heart. And one was in my jugular the other in my leg. My doctor said if I had waited maybe 20mins getting to the ER, she didn't think that I would "BE HERE" (her words). So please get that checked out SOON.
