Regarding Lupus Flares

A MyLupusTeam Member asked a question 💭

Has anyone here experienced one long continuous flare? For example, I was placed on permenent steroid treatment because, as my doctor explained, I have been in a continuous flare for the past few years. Is/Has anyone experienced this?

10mg of prednisone isn’t very much, but being on it for years is a long time. As ElizabethCrawford said, it will eventually cause osteoporosis, mess with your hormones, & really affect your whole body & mind. I know from experience. I was on high doses of it for about a year. I got it all & then some other wonderful other side effects like weight gain & moon face.
Have you thought about seeing another Rheumatologist for a second opinion? Not that there’s a problem with yours, but maybe someone else may have different ideas. That would be my advice. You can also do some research on your own. Best of luck to you💜

Marinaoc, prednisone is so damaging to your body, most doctors try to only have you use it during a flare. I got adrenal insufficiency, osteoporosis, kidney damage and cataracts from prednisone. Please don't take it everyday. There are many better medications for lupus now. The adrenal insufficiency is so difficult, its almost worse than the lupus and much more lethal. It's being recommended that prednisone should never be used for more than 10 days.

My first flare lasted for a long time. Never got treated during that time. Now for this one 2.5 prednisone a day. I now have hypogammaglobulinemia which is a immune deficiency. My doctors are in disagreement about whether Prednisone causes this. At least in these small of doses. Its a rough call.

Yes I’ve had long flares. The length of time varies but they have been long from a couple months to a year or more.

Yes, just diagnosed but my Rheumy has me on steroids also. 5 mg for a month then 2.5 mg. I'm in this continuous flare. It's not severe but won't let up.
