Members responding to the question about teeth and gum disease widely confirmed that dental problems are a common and serious concern, especially for those with Sjogren's and lupus. Several members shared experiences of lost teeth, fallen fillings, chipped teeth, and swollen gums during flares, with practical tips including soft toothbrushes, warm saltwater rinses, and custom nightguards from a dentist. A recurring theme was the importance of finding dentists who specialize in dry mouth or autoimmune conditions, and being cautious about procedures like implants due to higher infection risk from immunosuppression.

With secondary Sjogren's, yes, we get lots of dental issues, as I have. I wrote a fair amount about preventing these because I've had some serious problems. Take care and work like mad at preventing problems!

Generally, I think it's advisable to avoid unnecessary dental work. Due to our diminished immunity from lupus and most of the meds used to treat it, we are at higher risk of infection from procedures.

Ladies, please consider looking for dentists in your area who specialize in preventive dentistry and/or dry mouth/autoimmune diseases. Their online profiles should include this information. I have had much better luck with those with extra training in our conditions.

For those of us who are immunosuppressed, there's a higher risk of infection from implants, and the infection could track to the jawbone, potentially.

Has anyone had a dental implant? I’m worried about how I will heal.
