LadyE, I'm sure your mom isn't taking ACE inhibitors or ARBs (blood pressure meds), as they are known to cause angioedema. Lupus can definitely cause it, too. Great suggestions from Rebecca!

I had pretty bad angioedema like that when I was first getting diagnosed. I actually saw an allergist before a rheumatologist for it. He recommended cetirizine (zyrtec) and ranitidine (zantac). It worked really well, I stopped having the angioedema and hives. Zantac is no longer on the market, so currently using famotidine (pepcid) in its place, and it seems to work just as well. Currently taking 3 zyrtec and 2 pepcid daily, keeps those issues to a minimum. Of course, I would always recommend speaking with a doctor before adding new medications, even over the counter meds.
