What causes itching (pruritus) with lupus?

Itchy skin is one of the most common skin symptoms in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). It often occurs due to cutaneous lupus erythematosus (CLE), a type of lupus that primarily affects the skin. CLE can occur with or without systemic lupus and requires diagnosis through skin biopsy and blood tests by a dermatologist. Common lupus-related skin conditions that can cause itching include:

• Malar rash (butterfly rash) - affects about 40% of people with lupus
• Discoid lupus - causes thick, raised, scaly patches that may flake
• Hives (urticaria) - affects about 10% of lupus patients
• Cutaneous vasculitis - causes bumpy, itchy skin lesions due to blood vessel inflammation

If you develop any new or worsening skin symptoms, consult your rheumatologist. They may refer you to a dermatologist to determine the right treatment approach.
