Are sinus problems connected to lupus?

Yes, there is a connection between lupus and sinus problems. Research shows that about 31.5 percent of people with SLE experience nasal congestion, which is a major symptom of sinus issues.

Sinus problems can occur in lupus for several reasons:

- Inflammation: When lupus affects the upper respiratory system, it can cause inflamed sinuses. Some studies suggest sinus blockage may be directly related to how active your lupus is at any given time.

- Increased infection risk: People with lupus are more prone to sinus infections because lupus itself weakens immune function. Additionally, immunosuppressant medications like steroids and biologics used to treat lupus can further increase infection risk.

- Sjögren's syndrome: Some people with lupus also develop this condition, which causes dryness in the eyes, mouth, and nasal passages that may contribute to sinus issues.

Many MyLupusTeam members report chronic sinus problems, including constant drainage, pressure, pain, and recurrent infections. A MyLupusTeam member shared, "I have constant sinus infections and ear infections year-round."

If you're experiencing persistent sinus symptoms, talk with your doctor to determine the cause and find appropriate treatment.
