What would you like to know about gabapentin?

Gabapentin is a medication commonly used to help manage nerve pain in people with lupus. About 21 percent of people with lupus develop nervous system complications, which can cause persistent nerve pain.

How Gabapentin Helps:

Gabapentin is an anticonvulsant that affects how your body perceives pain. It's considered a safer alternative to opioids for treating nerve pain. Many people with lupus find it helpful for:

- Shooting pain and neurological symptoms
- Neuropathy (tingling or numbness in feet)
- Spinal pain
- Improving sleep

Common Side Effects:

- Drowsiness and dizziness
- Mood swings or agitation
- Vision problems
- Weight gain
- Feeling "loopy" or hungover

Serious Risks:

The FDA has warned about breathing problems, especially in people 65 or older or those with lung issues. This risk increases when gabapentin is taken with other medications like benzodiazepines, opioids, or sedating antidepressants.

Your doctor will likely start you on a low dose and gradually increase it if needed. Always tell your doctor about other medications you're taking to avoid dangerous interactions. Don't stop taking gabapentin suddenly, as this can cause withdrawal symptoms.

I tried the Gaba, however it caused hallucinations. My daughter caught me emptying the bottle and almost taking the whole thing. Thank God she walked in at that time!!!

Yes indeed that was my goal tappering off ive felt the same way at the end of the day my nerves would be on fire I felt so unhinged id pray before going to bed and just close my eyes. I've noticed I had to delegate my busy days with help from others and allow my self peace of mind if I could get things done.
