I noticed some pain on the backside of my hand and thought it was arthritis. Later the pain increased and my blood vessels were raised and tender when touched. Has anyone else experienced this? If so, what were you told was the cause? I am using my compression glove to help ease the pain. It's not helping much and it's keeping me awake.

I have found hand therapy (PT for the hands) very helpful, and everyone with hand issues may want to consider asking their doctor for a referral. Although I'm unable to do the exercises when my hands are very painful, on better days, they help keep my hands functioning for the daily tasks we all need to do. It's so important to maintain what hand strength we can!

Stay warm and safe during this winter storm, everyone.πŸ’œ

I get hand pain and swelling at times, too, Maria. Immersing my hand in cold water helps me a lot. I'm alarmed to hear it's keeping you awake at night! If you don't get relief, please get it checked out as soon as possible.πŸ’œπŸ’œ

What could be causing throbbing pain with raised, tender blood vessels on the back of your hand?

The raised, tender blood vessels you're experiencing could be related to inflammation from lupus affecting your hands. Lupus can cause widespread inflammation that affects joints and surrounding tissues, leading to pain and swelling in the hands and fingers.

A MyLupusTeam member shared a similar experience with hand pain and swelling, finding that inflammation from lupus was the underlying cause.

Several possibilities to consider:

- Arthritis or tendinitis: Inflammation at the joint or tendon sites can cause swelling, pain, and stiffness in the fingers and hands
- Carpal tunnel syndrome: Inflammation putting pressure on the median nerve in your wrist can cause pain and discomfort
- Infection: If there's any injury or break in the skin, infections can cause swelling, raised blood vessels, and tenderness
- Blood vessel inflammation: Lupus can sometimes affect blood vessels directly

Since your compression glove isn't helping and the pain is keeping you awake, it's important to contact your rheumatologist or seek medical care soon. Numbness, tingling with swelling, or worsening symptoms could indicate a more serious issue that needs immediate attention.

Your doctor can examine your hand, possibly order blood tests or imaging, and adjust your treatment plan if needed. They may recommend anti-inflammatory medications, medicated creams, or other treatments depending on the cause.

I agree with @A MyLupusTeam Member. Following my finger surgery I had physical therapy and it was effective.
