What causes inflammation in the legs and feet that leads to deep sock lines with lupus?

Deep sock lines in your legs and feet are typically caused by fluid retention (edema), which happens when fluid builds up in the tissues under your skin. In lupus, several factors can contribute to this:

Lymphatic System Issues
Lupus affects your immune system, including the lymphatic system, which helps maintain fluid levels in your body. When this system isn't working properly, fluid can accumulate in your legs and feet, causing swelling that creates those deep indentations from your socks.

Blood Flow Problems
People with lupus may experience issues with blood circulation. When blood pools in the leg veins instead of flowing efficiently back to the heart, it can lead to inflammation and swelling. This pooling can cause fluid to leak into surrounding tissues.

Lupus Nephritis
If lupus affects your kidneys (lupus nephritis), it can impact how well your body regulates fluid balance, potentially leading to swelling in the lower extremities.

Blood Clotting
Lupus can cause a stronger-than-normal blood clotting process, which may affect circulation and contribute to swelling in the legs and feet.

If you're experiencing persistent swelling with deep sock lines, it's important to discuss this with your healthcare provider, especially if accompanied by pain, warmth, or skin color changes, as these could indicate more serious complications.
