Are muscle spasms and sensations of muscles being pulled related to lupus?

Lupus can cause muscle spasms and unusual sensations throughout the body. While it's not the most common symptom, several MyLupusTeam members have described experiencing involuntary muscle movements and uncomfortable sensations.

These spasms can happen because lupus affects both nerves and muscles in your body. The condition can impact your peripheral nervous system, which sends signals to and from your muscles, potentially leading to cramping, twitching, and spasms.

Some members describe their experiences as:
- Spasms in the legs, arms, and torso
- Intercostal muscle spasms (between the ribs) that make breathing difficult
- Sensations that feel like muscles are being pulled or jerked
- Internal sensations that are hard to describe to others

Lupus can also cause a condition called lupus myositis, which involves muscle inflammation leading to weakness and pain. While this isn't directly linked to spasms, fatigued and inflamed muscles may be more prone to cramping.

It's important to track when these sensations occur and discuss them with your healthcare provider. They can help determine if the spasms are related to lupus itself, medication side effects, or another factor, and work with you on the best treatment approach.

I used to get terrible muscle spasms in my legs and feet. I’d spend most nights trying every crazy thing I could think of to alleviate the sensations. I started taking magnesium (it was supposed to help me sleep) I found that for me 1000 mg every day ended these sensations completely. It was the biggest blessing. I buy the magnesium in powder form and put it in my water all day long it works a treat.
