Members connected over experiencing phantom smells, particularly cigarette smoke at night, with some associating the phenomenon with neuropathy flares or finding comfort in scents that reminded them of loved ones. Several members shared that lupus and other autoimmune conditions can alter their sense of smell in unexpected ways, with some experiencing heightened sensitivity to perfumes, chemicals, and fragrances that trigger headaches or flares. A recurring theme was the importance of discussing unusual symptoms with a rheumatologist while trying not to stress, as phantom smells may be linked to overall disease activity rather than a serious standalone concern.

I've actually had a heightened ability to smell mold, chemicals in certain perfumes, all the wonderful smells you can get tasting wine, etc. We joke about me becoming a sommelier. Most perfumes don't smell good too me, it is almost like I can smell the irritating chemicals first in most of them. I take great pains in not bringing anything fragranced in the house because of the headaches I get from endocrine disruptors, etc. which seem to be in so much today.

Are you experiencing phantom cigarette smoke smells, especially at night when no one is smoking around you?

This unusual symptom isn't commonly discussed in relation to lupus, but lupus can affect the nervous system in various ways that might cause unusual sensory experiences. Lupus can cause peripheral neuropathy, which involves nerve-related symptoms like tingling, numbness, or altered sensations.

Some MyLupusTeam members have reported experiencing cool, tingly, or unusual sensations that they describe as feeling like menthol on their skin. While this is different from smelling phantom odors, it shows that lupus can affect how nerves process sensory information.

Phantom smells (called phantosmia) can sometimes occur when inflammation affects the nervous system. Since lupus can cause inflammation that damages the autonomic nervous system - which controls various unconscious body processes - it's possible this could extend to affecting smell perception.

It's important to mention this symptom to your doctor or rheumatologist, especially if it's new or bothersome. They can help determine if it's related to lupus activity, medication side effects, or another cause that needs attention.
