Hi there. I was bit by a tick and my lupus went from discoid to sle. Can't seem to get out of remission now. Is this normal?

I've had discoid for over 20 years. Once I was had developed Lyme it became sle and also developed 8 other auto immune diseases. Believe it or not after my Lyme treatment (PICC line) today I take no medications. Only supplements. I know that I should but it's it what I'm comfortable doing. I've only recently gotten where I can't seem to get out remission. Every single bone in my hurts. Ha e so many diseases I'm not sure what it what anymore. I apologize I meant I can't seem to get back into remission. I agree that I need to go back and see my lupus team but raising my 3 grandchildren has had me very busy. I will make an appointment and stop putting it off. Thank you.

It's worth clarifying something important: being *unable to get out of* a flare is actually the concern here, not remission. Remission means feeling *better* — so the goal is to get *into* remission, not out of it. When SLE is active and unmanaged, it can cause widespread pain, inflammation, and damage over time. The tricky part is that once inflammation turns into scarring or organ damage, it becomes much harder to treat. This is why rheumatologists emphasize early and consistent management.

Managing SLE without medication is a personal choice, but there are real risks to consider:

- Uncontrolled inflammation can lead to permanent organ damage
- SLE can affect kidneys, heart, and other vital organs
- Bone and joint pain may worsen without treatment
- Damage that accumulates is very difficult to reverse Given everything the body has been through, a visit to a rheumatologist — even just to get a current picture of what's happening internally — could be really valuable. It doesn't have to mean committing to medications, but knowing what's going on is powerful information.
