Mrs V23 I get the trying to hang in there. I bet a lot of our friends here feel the same. It's not a great feeling to be one more expense or start a bunch of new visits somewhere again etc. Good luck to you.

I would call your orthopedic surgeon. You would get them to do an X-ray faster to see what's going on. Please explain your situation to get in ASAP. Please keep us updated on things.
I am experiencing similar pain off and on. Sometimes it feels like my hip is locked up. I am trying to hang in there until next year for personal reasons.

Oh gosh. That sounds awful. I had replacement of both hips 3 years ago. Suddenly right hip is so stiff and painful. Trying to decide if I should call ortho for a check or see what happens for a bit. It's been a couple months now. Don't you just hate having to call and tell about something else going on?

Could you please tell me what kind of hip pain you are experiencing? I have avascular necrosis in my left hip and had total hip replacement surgery on my right hip several years ago.

Hip pain with lupus (SLE) can have several causes, and it's worth understanding what might be behind it β especially alongside lupus nephritis.
Here are some common reasons for hip pain with lupus:
- Avascular Necrosis (AVN) β Reduced blood flow to the bone can cause bone damage, often in the hips. Between 3% and 40% of people with SLE experience this. It can result from inflammation or long-term corticosteroid use.
- Corticosteroid side effects β Long-term use can lead to early bone loss (osteoporosis), which may cause hip joint pain.
- Pelvic floor muscle inflammation β Lupus can inflame muscles in the pelvic area, causing aching or pressure around the hips.
- Bone involvement β Lupus can affect the major pelvic bones, leading to discomfort.
One MyLupusTeam member shared, "My hips feel like they are being crushed at times." Another said, "Prednisone destroyed my hips. I've had three surgeries in seven years." Regarding lupus nephritis specifically, it occurs when lupus causes the immune system to attack the kidneys, leading to inflammation and reduced kidney function. Over time, this can lead to kidney damage if not managed carefully.
It's really important to speak with your rheumatologist about both your hip pain and kidney health. They may refer you to a kidney specialist for additional support. Catching issues like AVN early can also help prevent fractures, so don't wait to bring up any new or worsening hip pain at your next appointment.
