Members came together around a question about kidney-friendly eating for someone with Lupus Nephritis stage 5, sharing helpful resources including links from DaVita and the National Kidney Foundation for non-dialysis stage 5 dietary guidance. Several members emphasized the importance of working with a kidney dietitian and checking in regularly with a nephrologist, while one member noted that earlier stages may not require the same strict restrictions. A recurring theme was emotional support, with members encouraging one another to rest, accept help, and care for themselves alongside their loved ones.

Please be sure to take excellent care of yourself, too, Redz! As @A MyLupusTeam Member says, your dedication is amazing, but caregivers are prone to illness from exhaustion, so pace yourself.πŸ’œ

And @A MyLupusTeam Member, there's no need to follow stage 5 restrictions with milder kidney disease like yours, so please don't deprive yourself of nutrients! Salt restriction is most important for earlier stages.😘

A specialized kidney-expert dietitian is the best person to give you specific guidance, Redz, and your nephrologist should be able to refer you to one. I hope he's doing as well as possible!

Managing lupus nephritis at stage 5 without dialysis means being really mindful of what goes on your plate. Here's a general guide to foods that tend to be lower in potassium, phosphorus, protein, and sodium β€” but please work closely with your doctor or dietitian, as individual needs vary greatly at this stage.

Lower-potassium vegetables:
- Cabbage
- Cauliflower
- Green beans
- White rice (instead of potatoes)

Lower-potassium fruits:
- Apples
- Berries
- Grapes
- Pineapple

Lower-phosphorus protein options (in small portions):
- Egg whites
- Small portions of fresh (not processed) chicken or fish
- Fresh herbs to flavor meals instead of salt

Heart-healthy fats (low sodium):
- Olive oil
- Small amounts of flaxseed oil

General tips:
- Cook at home as much as possible to control sodium
- Avoid processed, packaged, or canned foods
- Use herbs and spices instead of salt
- Rinse canned vegetables to reduce sodium and potassium At stage 5, dietary restrictions can be very specific to your lab results and overall health. What's safe for one person may not be right for another. A registered dietitian who specializes in kidney health is truly your best ally here β€” they can build a personalized plan that works safely alongside your treatment.
