A negative ANA (antinuclear antibody) test means that few or no antinuclear antibodies were detected in your blood. Most labs consider a result below a ratio of 1:80 to be negative. It's worth knowing that a negative result doesn't always rule out lupus. Here's why:

- Labs don't all run ANA tests the same way, so low levels of antibodies might not be clearly detected
- Some people test negative on ANA but still have other lupus-specific antibodies, like anti-Sm
- In rare cases, lupus can be diagnosed with a negative ANA if kidney involvement is confirmed by biopsy

A negative result simply means the test didn't detect antinuclear antibodies at a significant level — it's just one piece of the puzzle, not the whole picture.

Always work with your rheumatologist to interpret results alongside your symptoms and full medical history, as they're best placed to guide next steps.
