Are you experiencing heat or burning sensations on your skin with lupus? This is actually really common — many MyLupusTeam members describe feeling like they're "burning from the inside out" or noticing random hot spots on their body.

There are several lupus-related reasons this can happen:

- Lupus flare — Feeling overheated can be an early warning sign
- Fever — A very common lupus symptom, affecting up to 86% of people with SLE
- Photosensitivity — UV exposure can trigger hot, burning skin sensations
- Vasculitis — Inflammation of blood vessels can cause heat and skin changes
- Peripheral neuropathy — Nerve damage that can create burning sensations, sometimes with numbness or weakness
- Medications — Corticosteroids like prednisone can cause overheating as a side effect Some practical tips to help manage the heat sensations include:

- Avoid caffeine, alcohol, and spicy foods
- Stay well hydrated
- Use a damp cloth or cool spray on your skin
- Bathe in cooler water
- Limit sun exposure
- Exercise in air-conditioned spaces and wear loose clothing

It's really worth tracking when these sensations happen and sharing any patterns with a healthcare provider. It could signal that a current treatment plan needs adjusting.

For those of us who are going through menopause, the hot flashes aggravate the problem and can last for years. Layering clothing and fans help.
