I have problems with severe muscle cramps in my calf muscles and feet in the middle of the night. I wake up in screaming pain. I am not sure if this is lupus related or medication. The doctor keeps trying different meds as I also have restless legs at night with pain. Does anyone else have this problem?

Was just reading some of the other responses above. Nanci mentioned quinine. I believe that's one of the ingredients in the OTC pills I found at Walmart. So, there's two votes for giving that a try!

There is an OTC homeopathic pill at Walmart called "leg Cramps" and another called. "Restless Legs" . I've used the restless legs one with good results.

My doc has used a combo with Hydrochloriquine and gabapentin. This has been a life saver big time for the hideous calf and feet cramping.....ask about it

Oh yes, and doesn't it suck! Do you take anything for the RLS? Have your doc make sure your potassium isn't low as that will cause cramps. I take skelaxin at night and it has worked well for me.

I started experiencing spasticity in my right leg, and poor balance. This evolved to severe trochanteric bursitis and inflammation of my synovial fluid around hip. But I was mis-diagnosed with Sciatica, and several x-rays MRIs of my back were done- this showed that I have many bone spurs and nerve root compressions- Neck- Thoracic Spine and Lumbar. 6 months ago I started having fasciculation's and spasms in my hands and legs. One spasm was so bad in pressing it out I broke a metatarsal with displacement. Not too much pain as I had also developed numbness in that foot. My Rhuemy did not suggest anything. My Primary sent me to a neurologist. He said I had Myoclonic spasms ( in addition to the fasciculation's). He thought MS and prescribed Baclofen. Baclofen does nothing but Zanaflex works well, but is too sedating. MRI of Brain and Spine did not reveal lesions, but nerve conduction ( Ruled out ALS) shows Peripheral neuropathy or Polyneuropathy. I have to see the neuro 1 more time for official DX (still could be nerve root) but " Molly's Fund" site has an article on polyneuropathy- check it out. also be aware Lupus also associated with osteoarthritis, and you could be experiencing nerve compression form bone spurs.
