I'm newly diagnosed (last couple of months) SLE, 28 years old. I was just married in May 2014. My husband and I had always said we wanted to start trying for a child about a year after marriage. Of course after my diagnosis, we wondered if that'd even be a good idea this soon. However, at my 1st Rheumatologist appointment at the beginning of this month, the doctor reassured me that pregnancy would be fine (she started me on plaquenil) and said being on the plaquenil and getting pregnant wouldn't⦠read more
I actually felt great during my 2 pregnancies. Both my kids were born about 1 month early with no problems. The only thing is that after my pregnancy I tended to have a flare up. But you are right Maryann--totally worth it!
I was diagnosed with lupus nephritis in the 90s, but when i was happy And healthy i managed to sustain a healthy pregnancy until pre eclampsia at 32 weeks. He was tiny but fine. He is now tiring, but i had a major flare after having him. You will be tired, but will adjust. We have PJ days and tho it can be upsetting when he asks me 'not to fall asleep again' i would not change my decision for the world. Glad you are on plaquinel, think that helped me not miscarry. Being a parent is scary and relentless, but health is not an automatic qualifier for a good parent award. My son understands we dont go to the park as much as some, but we read a lot and i put his toys in reach so he has a variety of stuff to entertain him. He is 3, almost 4 and so full of energy it is draining, but you can work out strategies. Believe me, you will do what needs to be done, do not underestimate the power of the maternal body. Even though i struggled breastfeeding, the front bumps knew before i did when he was hungry! If you have faith, support and a plan to deal with likely issues, it will be much easier in my experience. Sending love x
I was told after my diagnosis that I could not have a baby. They were WRONG. I had a very healthy baby and an uncomplicated pregnancy!
I love your explanation of your fatigue...never really been able to make any one understand how I feel....you just did....even though i just got my diagnosis in October...I now realize I have been dealing with Lupus and Sjogren's for years. I raised three boys and then helped with 6 of my grandkids. You can be an awesome mother, just remember to ask for help when you are having a bad time.Hopefully you have a great husband who will help with the night time duties....remember to rest when your baby does...good luck
You all make a very good point. Quality, not quantity is what ultimately counts. @A MyLupusTeam Member, thank you so much for sharing your thoughts! You really hit on some of my worries about the future (will I be able to run around the park with my child??...etc) but you helped put things into perspective by saying while you may not be able to do some of those more active things as much as your child would like, you make sure to still find ways to spend time with/interact with your child in ways that don't over exert YOU in the process. Reading together was a great example. Thank you!
