My rheumy recently took me off methotrexate and placed me on imuran due to the side effects i was having from the methotrexate. Has anyone else made this switch? how well has the imuran worked for you?

I made that switch about 2 yrs ago . I'm glad I did too ! Methotrexate was making my hair fall out at a very fast pace . With Imuran it falls out a little , but not near as bad as it was . My liver function was getting critically poor. .. About a month after I made the switch , I noticed a huge difference not just in my lab results , but I also felt a lot better . On methotrexate I was always getting thrush. . That all stopped after I made the switch . The way I see it , your doctor did you a big favor , I think you'll agree with me soon .

Imuran can cause skin changes so be vigilant with checking your skin and have a partner help you. My husband noticed a wacky mole on my upper shoulder and it turned out it was one step away from a melanoma. All in all, I had several spots that needed treatment. The removal and treatments took nearly a year to take care of--injections of a cancer treating medication is given into the moles and it's not fun. This is a potential side effect of Imuran, so be vigilant with your skin examinations.

When the doc put me on Plaquenil she gave me a form that I had to take to my opthamologist since I wear contacts. The form alerted her to the fact that I was on Plaquenil . she took a baseline scan of my eyes and every year when I go in she does the scant again to see if it's affected the macular in any way. Macular degeneration is irreversible and you could lose your eyesight. If you don't wear glasses you may want to find an opthamologist to do a baseline scan in order to track and make sure that there's not any macular degeneration going on overtime.
