Anyone else is taking the immunosuppressive medication Imuran or already took it in the past for lupus and DM? Did it helped and how long did it take to be effective? I’m beginning this new medication in 1-2 weeks and I’m hoping it will be able to increase my strength in thighs and shoulders/upper arms. Yesterday, I was preparing myself for a dinner at a restaurant and had difficulty to just do a little ponytail in my hair because my arms were too weak after just 1 tentative 😩. Ive been on Imuran (azathioprine) for almost 13 years now along with prednisone and hydroxychloroquine. I tolerate it well at 75mg (at present) but have been pm 150mg prior. It has helped control my nephritis. I was also able to stay on it while pregnant, which is not the case with Cellcept. Two healthy twin girls!

Hi Susie, I’ve been on Imuran since 2005 and it helps my issues but mine is not the same as yours. I’ve tolerated it well, be sure to take it with food or you may experience nausea. I hope it works well for you, keep us updated on how it’s working. I’m sure it’s one of those meds that take 6+ weeks to get in your system but everyone is different. 🤗🦋

Methotrexate made me very sick as well. I gave it 3 months and then stopped--could not take it anymore.

Ummm…I was on it for about a year, and then something crazy happened. I ended up in the ER with gastric pain, projectile vomiting, and severe dehydration. They said it was from the methotrexate, so the rheumie took me off. However, before that, I did really well on it.

Yes, Imuran was working, but my doctor felt that CellCept would benefit me more. It's been keeping my kidneys stable for several years.
