I've read after 5 years of taking Plaquenil you start to have a higher risk of vision problems. Maybe I should switch to another medication. I have been getting an eye exam twice every year.

I have been taking Plaquenil for 15+ years. I have eye test every 6 mos. I have had no problems with it.

I have been taking plaquinel for years. I can't even remember when I first started taking them. I have no problems with them whatsoever.

@A MyLupusTeam Member my specialist also told me if there starts to be any indication of changing eye sight she will cease the meds and all will return to normal once off it. It seems to be a matter of being vigilant so things can be reversed. Cheers πŸ˜€β˜•πŸ°

Thank you Hokulani!

I know someone else with rheumatoid arthritis who was taking Plaquenil much longer than I have and didn't have issues.

I was diagnosed with SLE 16 years ago and Plaquenil was the first medication I was put on and still take it till this day. I have eye appointments twice a year to see whether or not the medication has any effect on my vision. I wear glasses but this was way before I got diagnosed with lupus. There have been slight changes but nothing drastic. According to the eye doctor the changes in my vision was not as a result of the medication. All I can say is try it first and see how your body and eyes react to it. By reading everyone elses responses it seems as if majority have had no problem. Good luck and keep us posted as to what the outcome is.
