In the past 2 years I have been prescribed 2 antibiotics that caused very serious allergic reactions. One was Levofloxin and the other Sulfameth. My lips began to itch and swell and then my hands would burn and break out in blisters that felt like burns. The pharmacist freaked out more than I did, especially when I refused to go to the emergency room. Of course, this stuff always happens on the weekend. I ended up going into bad flares in both these instances. I have taken these meds in the past… read more

I can only take at this point like antibiotics by mouth an the rest are to strong an have to be given by IV because I'm allergic or they just don't work. I have chronic kidney infections an the antibiotic thing is a really big problem because it's like a roll of the dice to know if anything will work or make me worse. Sulfa drugs are also horrible for my Lupus and what triggered my lupus but sulfa drugs are the best class of antibiotics for kidney infections. So I end up in the hospital about once a month with a horrible kidney infection antibiotics that don't work or ones that are making me sicker in the long run.

Look up sulfa and lupus a lot of people have problems

I think this seems to be a common thing - I am now allergic to many antibiotics. Its very scary when you need them, but thankfully there are many classes of antibiotic. The only advice I can give you is to keep a list of your reactions on different types, to reduce the likelihood of being accidently prescribed something similar. And dont be afraid to be assertive and question every drug you are prescribed.

Be mindful that some infections change the way your body responds to the antibiotic. So you may react on one occasion, but not another. This can happen in people without lupus, so we just have the extra challenge! Personally I would steer clear of anything causing a reaction though - fortunately there are a lot of different types so you shouldnt need to go back to something that made you sick.

I had an exremely horrible rash before I was diagnosed and it was all on my hands and arms and feet. It itched badly..was red and all over the shape of little worms and pimples..It was just after a severe flue for which I took Penicillen..2 coarses. Dr said its allergic reaction for penicillen . Nothing helped for it until he gave me cortizone injection
.tablets and cream. I remember that..when I was driving and the sun shone on my hands it atarted burning and itching twice as much. I reckon it was the undiagnosed lupus that played a big role

Well that sucks. Could they give you an injection of Rocephen. It is an awesome antibiotic but must be given IM inj in buttocks or given IV. Might want to ask. We couldn't get rid of my moms UTI they finally had to put her on keflex. Hope they find one.
