Has anyone with SLE had a problem with their toe nails falling off?

A MyLupusTeam Member asked a question 💭

I have had issues in the past with some of my toe nails falling off. I have one doctor who says that this is due to a lupus flare. I have another doctor who says she has never heard of such a thing. I was just wondering what everyone else's experiences might be. Thanks for your insights & hope you all have a great day!

Yes! But not my toe nails, my finger nails. I went through a a 'phase' a few years ago where I nearly lost all of my fingernails. They were all lifting up from the nailbed. The dermatologist I went to said it was Onycholysis. I didn't have any infections or anything that could really explain it...other than Lupus. Eventually they stopped falling off, but my nail bed is much smaller now and my nails are very thin n weak.

I have recently started experiencing this issue. One night I had a Raynaud's flare on my toes and the next morning three on my toes were red and really inflamed, and had really bad pain that it was hard to even walk. A couple of weeks later one of my toe nails on one of the affected toes, fell off. My doctor said that raynauds can cause this issue, in some rare cases it can even cause for the toes to be amputated. I feel that doctors often just experiment with us and 9 out of 10 times, they are so misinformed about our illness. Lupus is a more complex illness that can open doors to other issues that doctors are not aware of.

Thank you guys. It's helpful to know that I'm not the only one who has experienced this!

Both of my big toenails have fallen off first they kind of layered and then they fell off. Then they stopped I don't know if they're going to do it again but my toenails are very very thin. my finger nails are real brittle and weak they break all the time.
