I have been having trouble swallowing and need to take my meds 1-2 at a time. My GI did not seem to think it's a big deal. He said sjogrens can cause problems with a muscle but I don't remember which muscle or group he said.
U mat have dysphagia which is trouble swallowing I used to be a Speech Language pathologist in my other life and I would recommend a Modified Barium Swallow if the Esophagus problem does not fix it
I have sjogrens also. It helps to drink water before taking and with your meds and I will eat a slice of bread afterwards to push the med down my esophagus.
Yes. I choke on water all the time. Also, I choke on my own spit often. Went to swallow testing and therapy so I would stop getting fluid in my lungs.
Basically, use a straw and focus on drinking only when drinking. Remember where to put your tongue.
I tonk it's because my thyroid is inflamed due to nodules.
Trouble swallowing was the first question my good Dr. Moran asked when she suspected I had something else or something more than Fibromyalgia. Which finally brought me to Lupus. With Lupus you may lose the little hairs on the inside of your throat as you may lose hair other places, you may have problems with thyroid which can make swallowing difficult, or you may just be experiencing the muscle fatigue and weakness that is in your arms, legs, eye muscles, etc in your neck and throat. Remember your tongue is a muscle one of the larger.
Just as with everything we must become more deliberate with our motor skills. Do what we can to reduce inflammation. For many problems in my mouth I use the old salt water remedy. For me it works well, does no damage, and if nothing else makes me feel that I am actually doing something about my situation.
Of course tea is a nice remedy for many things, a gentle respite and Lady Ursala strongly recommends it along with large quantities of Teddy bear hugs.
I mentioned to my rheumatology that I was having trouble swallowing pills and she said that with lupus my joints are inflamed and that the cricoid (the thing that goes up and down in your throat when you swallow) is a joint. She did not suggest anything but to cut up food and medications.
