Hair loss is a typical diagnosing symptom of lupus and many of us deal with it. Ironically, it is one of the least physically painful symptoms but can definitely be one of the most emotionally painful. It is for me. As a kid, I dealt with image issues but my hair was the ONE feature that I loved about myself. I had beautiful long, straight, silky, black hair. Beautiful. Shortly after my diagnosis in 2006, during my first big flare, i lost A LOT of my hair. I decided to cut it very short because… read more
I, like you, had the most beautiful hair my whole life and didn't really appreciate it until it was gone. I have lost all of my hair and had it re-grow several times. Currently, I have no hair at all...no eyebrows or eyelashes either. It may grow back, it may not, there is no way to know. When I am having a "feeling sorry for myself moment", I try to think of all of the things I have in life that I am grateful for and how so many people have nothing. It helps me to keep things in perspective and realize that it really is only hair. Just remember you are beautiful no matter what!
Biotin supplements. Biota or Pur 'ador shampoo. Help to a certain degree. I've notice besides excessive hair loss and thinning, the texture of my hair has changed as well becoming dry and brittle. Once or twice a week I put coconut oil on it overnight to moisturizer and wash it out in the morning. Getting a good haircut helps as well. Oh yeah -- I use Toppik keratin fibers to hide balding areas. You can check it out online.
First i would ask my doctor if i could take a different medications. Theres hundreds of drugs in this world there has to be something else. Second when I lost my hair i used Just Natural hair products. I used the alopecia spot treatment and the hairloss shampoo and conditioner. Idk if they helped but my hair did in fact grow back. Having all this regrowth is awesome. Also ppl have great results when taking biotin. They have shampoos now with biotin in it. I wish u the best of luck on ur journey! Also when ur hair grew back curly had u been doing any kind of chemo?
One girlfriend who suffered especially with breathing problems, AND hair loss - said 'that if she brushed her hair many, many times each night - or even during the day - long or short - it seemed to circulate the head or maybe it was relaxing - don't know. I,m like you two abvove , thick beautiful black hair - now I struggle or wear a hat a lot!
Thank you all for your encouraging comments and advice. I truly appreciate it. I am particularly interested in natural remedies (i have enough drugs going through my system). Ive heard of using rosemary and i have found some secret remedies from India that use natural oils including coconut. Also some tips with onion juice and also ginger root. I am going to try it all out. I know its just hair and i agree with you RobynS. I dont stress about it anymore like i did the first couple of years. I would be in tears after every shower. I have so much more to be thankful for, especially now (just had a kidney transplant 4 months ago). and Belle, yes it is great advice to ask doctors if there is something else i can take, unfortunately that is not an option for at least a few more months, preferably another 8. It is a vital part of my post-transplant regimen and personally id rather risk my hair than my new kidney. To answer your question, no i was not on chemo when it came back curly. I think the hormone change with kidney failure contributed to the new hair style. it was very odd to go from perfectly and completely straight to curly. at this point i would take purple hair growing back in lol :) wish me luck!
