There is no definitive blood test for lupus. A diagnosis of lupus is based on symptoms, history, a variety of tests, and process of elimination. This is called a differential diagnosis. The results of each set of tests tell the doctor where to look next. Most people take 3 to 5 years to get a diagnosis once they start searching.

The AVISE test for lupus is more definitive than other tests doctors might order. The AVISE test must be special ordered from the only company that offers the test. The blood has to be sent to that company for evaluation. Insurance may or may not pay for it.

I had a rash very bad rash all over my body for 3 or 4 weeks. I asked the dr to test me for lupus because my aunt and grandmother had it. Plus I could not stand the rash anymore.

Labs go from positive to negative all the time. That's what makes diagnosis so hard if your doctor relies on the labs alone which a lot do. Find one that will look at your symptoms and give them as much consideration. Some people are never diagnosed.....
