Depending on the results of today's labs, it might be our next course of action. (I am not sure if Benlysta is the only one out there, but I think that's what he said). I am currently on methotrexate, cellcept and hydroxychloroquine and my lupus has caused several concerns but the most critical is the lung disease.

I am just curious what to expect if this is the course of action my doctor recommends.

I've been on Benlysta for approximately a year and a half now. It has given me my life back. It helps with the joint pain and the fatigue. It took about six months before I appreciated how much it helps me. I do experience sporadic nausea throughout the month so I have a script for that. I have an infusion port because my veins didn't tolerate it very well. Any other specific questions?

@A MyLupusTeam Member you hit the nail on the head with regards to what I wanted to hear. You told me the results, your response to side effects and since I have crappy veins, you also gave me a heads up that i might need a port too. Thank you! You're amazing!

Benlysta won FDA approval for the treatment of lupus in 2011. Benlysta is a monoclonal antibody. The only other treatments SPECIFICALLY approved for lupus are aspirin, hydroxychloroquine and prednisone-all approved in 1958. We do take other medications for lupus. These are medications that are approved for human use in other diseases and conditions but have not had lupus trials to win approval specifically for lupus.

That said, some chemotherapies that are used in the treatment of cancer are used for lupus but in lesser doses. The side effect of suppressing the immune system is not desirable in treating cancer but it IS desirable in treating lupus. Cytoxan and Rituxan are among the more common IV therapies.

Benlysta precisely targets cells by providing the BLys protein that may be missing in people with lupus. Some of the other therapies just suppress the immune system.

hello @A MyLupusTeam Member i have pulmonary fibrosis from the sle opped in its tractsearly on, it was stopped in its tracts before more organ damage with iv cyclophosphamide, before
benlystra was introduced as the latest best medicine. not dampening down auto-immune attack on our connective tissue is of the utmost priority, as once the healthy organs are damaged, it is a sad affair greiving for said healthy state. i wish yu all the best to minimise further damage, and that you will, as i am now, in a state of management that allows me to be very appreciative for what i have left to be greatful about. regards, Margaret
