It's completely understandable to have questions about infusion therapy β it can feel like a big step! One of the most commonly used infusion treatments for lupus is belimumab (Benlysta). It helps manage lupus symptoms by targeting the immune system's overactivity.
Here's what to know about how it works:
- Given through an IV at a medical clinic
- Infusions typically start every two weeks for the first three doses
- After that, it moves to a maintenance schedule of once every four weeks As for side effects, some people do experience reactions during or after infusions. Things to watch for include:
- Rash
- Nausea
- Fatigue
- Muscle pain
- Headache
- Facial swelling
More serious side effects can include an increased risk of infections, and in some cases, depression. Always let your doctor know right away if anything feels off. MyLupusTeam members have shared mixed experiences. One member shared that infusions left them exhausted for days, while another noted that despite fatigue, they started seeing positive changes in their skin and joints over time.
Everyone's experience is different, so talking openly with your rheumatologist about what to expect is really the best move here. π

Many of our teammates are on infusions, Kelly, and they can be very effective. Like all other lupus treatments (other than HCQ), they suppress our immunity to some extent, though Benlysta reportedly doesn't cause a significant increase in infections. Like any other drug, allergic reactions can occur, too. Benlysta has been proven effective for lupus nephritis and reduces our symptoms, too. There are possible side effects, as the AI answer notes.

I originally was on Orencia, but I am now on Actemra Infusion every 4 weeks.
