Found out that I'm severely allergic to Plaquenil , whole body rash with hives and swollen face after three weeks of being on it (rash lasted two weeks too). Rheumy now starting me on the Aralen (Chlorquine). He said they are similar but I might have luck with this new one. Anyone out there that was allergic to plaquenil that was able to take the Chloroquine?
I too was allergic to Plaquenil. I was told by my autoimmune derm that some patients switch from hydroxychloroquine to chlorine and "may" tolerate better. I ended up allergic to both since both made my skin ash grey like a zombie. My rheum noticed it and told me that both hydroxychloroquine and Chloroquine target melanin, so then I got switched to methotrexate. Methotrexate has different side effects, so now Im on CellCept, but rheum will also add back methotrexate with CellCept. Trying to find "your" ideal lupus combo that you can tolerate will take time. Ive been experimenting since Nov 2015.
That's great 😊, I found Plaquenil and Aralen (if you're curious just Google search for 'GOCLEAN247' 👍). So I can choose the best one. Aralen (chloroquine) is not prescribed very often now because Plaquenil (hydroxychloroquine) tends to be better tolerated, but it is occasionally used in addition or as an alternative.
Methotrexate should be cautiously taken and closely monitored as it will jack your lungs up bad if there's anything there already to compromise them. Report any bad side effects immediately.
