During my rheumatology appointment yesterday my rheumy said that the ANA patterns “mean nothing” and no rheumatologist worth his/her salt will take pattern into consideration. He says all ANA pattern testing is done by machine and therefore is unreliable.
Seems my rheumy will only dx when more specific antibodies are found like dsDNA, Sm, ENA etc
Does this sound normal? My understanding is that those other antibodies aren’t always picked up during testing so I’m concerned we will continue to look… read more
Yes Jams ana is not the only tool for dx. Actually there is no set test to dx lupus. It took my rheumy 5 1/2 yrs to dx me “officially” and I had a lot if symptoms and a strong family history of ahtoimmune illnesses. But, she treated my symptoms in thr meantime. So hopefulky that is what your rheumy will do as well. ((Hugs))
Sometimes it helps to write down, which of the criteria have been tested positive by a doctor. When you have more than 4, you should get the diagnose. But I know the doctors can give you a hard time about it. I knew for 2 years already that I have Lupus, but just got diagnosed last week.
Wishing you a listening doctor and one that is willing to look further than only anti-dsDNA or anti-SM, as only 50% of people with SLE have those in their blood.
My dr. went by ana results as well as a check list of 10 things, which if you have at least 4 of the things on list it is considered that you have lupus.
I was told with a high ANA plus the presence of 4 of the 11 criteria you can have a diagnosis.
I was given plaquenil (thats the anti-malaria drug used for lupus, ra and sjogrens to name a few) at first. Then a few visits later gabapentin (for nerve pain) and muscle relaxers (to help me sleep better). I’m on a ton of other stuff but I have lupus, fibro, COPD (lupus affecting my lungs), neuropathy (lupus affecting my nervous system), IBS, sjogrens and I’ll stop there. I would have a serious talk with the rheumy and tell him or her to please treat your symptoms (they work for us and should listen to us) otherwise you may have to find another; a lot of patients see more than one rheumy until they find the right fit. And continue to take pics and log how you feel etc.
