Smith Antibody Came Back At 5.5 Can This Verify Lupus?

Hello all. New here, this is my first post. I’m in the process of trying to get a diagnosis. I’ve been sick for a year, my doctor finally started to put the pieces of my varied and strange symptoms together and sent me to the rheumatologist. Despite having so many physical markers (low grade fevers, awful facial rashes, anemia, joint pain, neck swelling, constant fog and a headache for six months) that would substantiate the diagnosis that my primary suspects, I read his doctor’s notes after my… read more

For smiths antibody, is the result either negative or positive? Not a number range? I'm in Australia so it might be different elsewhere. I have negative smiths but positive ana. So textbook theory says no to lupus. I'm confused.. any help would be good on this topic. . Thanks.

Hi there. I have been through utter hell with doctors and can't tell you how often I was sent home from the ER or a doctor visit with them thinking I was "just depressed or anxious". I almost died because of it, no joke. It isn't just you. My best advice is find another doctor unless yours drops the bias real soon. And from what I know that positive test should help. It is a variety of tests and symptoms but that should at least get them to listen. Be stubborn and hang in there!

It's my understanding it is negative or positive with a range. Mine is the same as yours - positive ANA, negative Smith, but that didn't rule out Lupus for me based on other tests and symptoms. I looked it up and found this.

Hi, I am so sorry about your experience. I know it must be very frustrating. I have had similar symptoms to you as well over the years but never thought anything of them. I had some blood work come back normal and some not normal. I had a positive ANA and a couple weeks ago was dx with undifferentiated connective tissue disease with a lupus spectrum and was told to begin taking plaquenil. Did you get a positive ANA? My smith lab either was negative or was a very low positive (wasn’t to sure how to interpret it). I would suggest doing as must research as you can and keep in track of your symptoms. Then you can share them with your doctor of what you are experiencing. I know it can be very difficult...but try to do the best you can and research. I am learning a lot on this website as well :)

Thanks for the reply. I’m locked into Kaiser, thus having very limited choice in doctors. Frustrating, I’m just hoping something gives some validity to my issues so I can be taken seriously.
