I have a rash on my body but not the butterfly rash. I do have hair loss. Also, I don’t have sun sensitivity. All my labs so far indicates lupus and more labs are pending. I do have several other symptoms (too many to list).

You don't necessarily have to have either symptom for a diagnosis. There's a list of 11 criteria for lupus many doctors use in coordination with your lab results. Generally having at least 4 indicates the possibility of someone having lupus. Each doctor has his or own method of determination for a diagnosis.💜

Can you have lupus without hair loss or a butterfly rash?

Yes, it's absolutely possible to have lupus without experiencing hair loss or a butterfly rash. While these are common symptoms, not everyone with lupus develops them.

Your lab results show several positive antibody markers that are significant for lupus:

* Positive ANA (antinuclear antibody)
* High SSA and SSB antibodies
* High Smith antibody - this is highly specific for lupus
* High SM/RNP antibody

The Smith antibody in particular is a strong indicator of lupus, even without visible skin symptoms.

Lupus symptoms vary widely from person to person. Some people experience primarily internal symptoms like joint pain, fatigue, kidney issues, or other organ involvement without the typical skin manifestations.

It's important to discuss these lab results with a rheumatologist who can evaluate your complete symptom picture, medical history, and test results together. A lupus diagnosis typically requires meeting specific clinical criteria beyond just lab work, but your antibody profile is certainly consistent with the condition.
