Crofton, MD

It started about a year ago. Prior to that I had never had a problem giving blood. I mean it started suddenly. It is like my veins are too deep to hit. I would say it is from having my blood taken so much, but even when I was having blood work monthly, I never had this type of problem. My son has this problem too. I hate when he has to have his blood taken. He too, is very hard to hit. This is new for me, but he has always had this problem. Any idea what this could be???

I too have this problem. I’ve been told my veins are small and they roll. Before giving blood I do drink plenty of water. I also consume grape juice because I’ve been told it makes the veins pop up, by a surgery nurse.

Drink plenty of water before you get it drawn. Being dehydrated makes the veins sink and roll.

Your veins may roll. Also veins that are used alot eventually are hard to get blood from even though they get them before. A lot of labs have students that have a harder time than some. I was in a lab that was very cold so they put warm heated towels on me and it did better. I saw they are coming out with a new device that is a vein finder and it can "see" the veins. I have one lady that works at the lab that can get mine every time when no one else can.
