I was diagnosed with lupus 6 months ago. I'm in between medications right now and just take prednisone as needed. I frequently have days or weeks at a time where I have a lot worse symptoms but my ESR and CRP have always been normal. Does that mean I'm not having true flares?
No that's not what it means
@A MyLupusTeam Member I don't remember exactly what my numbers have been, just that they're in the normal range. It's really hard to find information about normal markers for inflammation and how this reflects disease activity. All I can find is that almost every reference reports that normal esr and CRP don't rule out active disease. If I find out anything more I will let you know
My latest results Crp 22 Esr 49 C3 216.9 and normal C4. I've been testing since 2013. Recently got a lupus diagnosis through skin biopsy because I had skin eruptions that has lasted nearly a year. I have systemic lupus. You wouldn't believe the amount of medication I am on. I am thankful for my Rheumatology and Primary Care doctors, and am most definitely thankful for meds. I was diagnosed with Sjogren's Syndrome in 2018. I've been on Plaquenil 400mg daily since and started Leflunomide 20mg around 2019. I was also taking Pilocarpine until it began making me paranoid, so now I take Cevilimine instead, for saliva production. Prednisone 5mg for flares, unless my joint pain is so bad I have to get a steroid injection. Other health problems that I am on meds for are diabetes, high blood pressure, gout, migraines, neuropathy, ibs, high cholesterol, osteoarthritis, and low back pain, that's just to name a few. I've had surgery on both hands for carpal tunnel syndrome. It has been one week ago since I started Saphnelo Infusions, I will be taking every 4 weeks. I could see a difference in my skin problems after day one. I'm praying I will soon be able to start coming off some of these meds. My team of doctors include Allergy Specialist, Heart Specialist, Dermatology, Rheumatology, GI, Orthopedic, Pain Management and Eye Doctors. My life consists of routine doctors visits and much needed rest. It takes a long time to get a diagnosis.
Thank you! I’d appreciate that
I’m starting to wonder if my rheumy is more used to treating RA which usually shows very high inflammation markers. Some of what he’s been saying and looking for in my labs (CRP, ESR etc) seems to be unusual for Lupus.
@A MyLupusTeam Member I had a compliment test done but the doctor screwed up. He did my labs when I was on a huge dose of prednisone which he later admitted would alter all my results and they needed to be “discarded” Yet he never repeated most of the tests. My CRP was raised to 7 when I was medicated. By the time he ran it again, months after my flare, it was only abt 1.5. He never ran the compliment tests again or the hepatitis tests again plus a host of others. Since I was not showing positive results for dsDNA or ENA (?) he ruled out an autoimmune problem 🙄 I’m now seeing another rheumatologist and have had 1 appointment. She is waiting for me to have labs done but I’m trying to time those labs correctly to catch something. The labs she has prepared seem much more comprehensive but I don’t want to go when I’m feeling well or I fear they won’t pick up anything and she too will brush me off
