My rheumatologist thinks I have lupus and has ordered monthly blood tests to monitor. Every test so far has shown high C3 and normal C4. I know lupus normally shows low C3&C4, so what does this mean? Does anybody else with lupus have a high C3?

Remember everyone is different with tests. My rheumatologist once told me, you can’t trust all blood tests. If I’d think I was having a flare up but test didn’t show it, she always went on how I felt, because I know my body best. I loved her. But than she got a bad cancer and died within the year. So remember, there are worse things than lupus.

My C3 and C4 were both normal, but some of my other labs were clearly off. Does she run any other tests? Lupus isn’t usually diagnosed through labs alone. It’s usually a trend in a handful of different labs along with corroborating symptoms.

Thanks! Wow, that's super scary. You're right - there could be worse things!

Oh yes, she's run a number of other tests. My CRP is high, ESR is high, ANA was positive, double strand was neg. The C3 and C4 confused me, though, because I read that low C3 and C4 are hallmarks of lupus.
