I finally got my hands on my daughters bloodwork! Initially I was told she’s positive for dsDNA. Turns out the nurse was confused, she’s ANA positive, homogeneous 1:80 and she’s Anti SS DNA 47. Spam me with your thoughts on this!
Her ANA is positive but 1:80 is considered a “low positive.” That it’s low shouldn’t matter in your daughters case but i’ll explain some details...
A dilution of 1:40 shows antibodies but at a level considered “clinically insignificant”
1:80 is the next level up and it is considered positive but a weak positive, and this may be where your doctor is going wrong...
The issue here is that there is a certain percentage of healthy people (or those with a family history of AI disease) who will test positive for a 1:80 titer. These people are healthy, have no symptoms of illness but test positive at a dilution of 1:80. So some doctors ignore an ANA at this dilution when/if there’s no other supporting evidence of disease. BUT.... YOUR DAUGHTER HAS SYMPTOMS!! Therefore the ANA should be considered positive and be considered evidence of autoimmune disease. In fact, a positive ANA is 1 of 4 clinical symptoms needed for a lupus diagnosis. And the Homogenous pattern is further evidence of Lupus since that pattern is usually associated with Lupus. There are several patterns and each is more prevalent in certain AI diseases
Also ANA fluctuates! She could have been 1:80 the day she tested and 1:640 2 weeks later.
More importantly tho, her ANA titer doesn’t matter since her dsDNA is so high! The ANA is often just a starting point to rule in or rule out the possibility of AI disease. They don’t bother running expensive specific tests (like dsDNA) if they can rule out the possibility of an autoimmune disease just by testing for ANA. Consider it the first hurdle one must clear before further investigation is decided upon. Your daughter tested a very high positive for dsDNA and that is a huge red flag. Your doctor is incompetent if he doesn’t realize this
Your daughter is testing positive for some AI disease and she needs care. A health body doesn’t produce dsDNA, they appear when the body is attacking its own cells and that doesn’t happen in healthy people
If there’s one thing that you take away from my rantings let it be this....
Both her tests were positive! Insist on a doctor who recognizes the seriousness of these results and then does something about it
My best to you both
Thank you! I’m praying with positive Anti-DNA we will be taken seriously. I’m sick to my stomach with fear we’re going to be turned away again.
>1:80 ANA is elevated Antibody Level
dsDNA Antibody >47 is positive
Anything >10 and over is positive
