Hi guys so i haven't been on in a little while but i have questions. Do any of treat your lupus with marijuana? If so, do you find it to be helpful? Does it mask symptoms or help with the actual progression of the disease? Also if you use, do you also take any medications with it? Have you been able to reduce any or eliminate any of the medications that you have been taking for your lupus? I am just at a point where I'm just shy of 20 pills a day and I'm not even thirty...and i have had lupus… read more
I find that it helps my pain. It helps w/ nausea. I also have pretty bad anxiety that it helps conrol. I am actually in the very SLOW process of weening off my steroid and Marijuana is definitely helping in that process. I have avascular necrosis caused from Lupus and prolonged steroid use. There isnt much help offered for this condition, besides joint replacement. I have already had a knee replacement at 31 years of age. My joint pain is extreme. I use medical marijuana as a substitute for narcotic pain medicine. Sometimes you may need stronger pain meds and theres nothing wrong with that, but i choose to use the marijuana so that i dont have to use higher strength pain meds very often.
Yes I find that Medicinal Marijuana helps manage any Acute symptoms . I still take 28 pills a day but medicinal marijuana helps the itching and burning in my arms which have been covered in blisters for 4 yrs. There has been no cure but definitely helps me from freaking out when my skin is so very itchy and painful. think I am going out of my mind,,, It also helps my appetite for which I’ve lost over 45 pounds and also helps me to sleep..Comfort, appetite and sleep are something we need every day for which I was not doing for a very very long time. It also helps with pain and inflammation. Quick relief and very grateful for the opportunity to engage in the Medicinal Marijuana Program and certainly . never thought I’d be a grandmom smoking pot,! Lol! Good luck, Hugs!
Until this year, none of the research I have read showed any results that marijuana could help with anything besides pain and nausea. However, this exerpt is from an article about research and marijuana:
With marijuana and lupus, there is some research showing that it may be a valuable option for people not only with this particular condition but other autoimmune disorders. Cannabis has been shown to decrease inflammation in the body because it suppresses particular components of the immune system. Because of how cannabis may potentially affect the immune system it can help calm the abnormal immune response that is characteristic of lupus.
Specifically, cannabis lowers levels of something called interleukin-2 and raises interleukin-19 which is an anti-inflammatory protein. These are key factors that are leading researchers to believe there could be a beneficial link between marijuana and lupus.
In general, most researchers do believe that cannabis has the potential to fight pain and inflammation, and these are two of the biggest issues people with lupus suffer from.
This doesn’t necessarily mean that people need to smoke marijuana or even get high in order to receive the benefits.
With marijuana and lupus, people may actually be able to gain the benefits by using CBD which is a particular component of cannabis that doesn’t have psychoactive effects. High levels of oral CBD may be the best way for people to deal with their lupus symptoms. However, it’s important that people look for high-quality CBD products. CBD can be used as an oil under the tongue, it can be vaped, it can be taken in capsule form, and it can be included in edibles such as gummies.
The official stance on the use of medical marijuana and lupus from the Lupus Foundation of America is that they support more research being done on the topic. They also encourage people with lupus to speak with their doctor about the potential benefits of medical marijuana, rather than trying to self-medicate.

I have to be honest - one night before I could get to my new rheumatologist, I was in so much pain I was on the verge of crying. I had a friend say “just try this”. I was desperate.......every single pain in my body was GONE! It took a few minutes but it worked. I did feel a little better the next day but I can’t say it was the Marajuana. The pain did come back - full force and my new rheumatologist put me on some really good anti-inflammatory and Benlysta with plaquenil. I haven’t tried since. I was very astonished how much pain the marijuana took away. It changed my attitude and stigma about it. It could help people who are at their last reaory.
the lupus/fibro meds made me sicker that sick. I quit taking it all & went on to Med marijuana & the CBD oils. I am in remission more than not & I love living again. I do not discuss this with my PC, as he thinks we are drug addicts if we do this. I have a med marij Dr that is so to die for, I love her! Seems like the only one that doesn't want to throw me back on plaquinal or pain pills. Thanks be to God!
Bless you for a great Good Friday.
