I do when I flare mainly because the lupus likes to attack my kidneys. All I taste is the toxins building up...my sense of smell never fully bounced back either

Lupus itself can cause changes in the sense of taste, often due to medications or related conditions. Here are some potential causes:

- Medications: Treatments for lupus, such as methotrexate, azathioprine (Imuran), and cyclosporine, can cause changes in taste. Other medications like antibiotics, blood pressure medications, and diabetes treatments can also affect taste.
- Hypothyroidism: Common in people with lupus, this thyroid dysfunction can alter taste, but it is reversible with medication.
- Kidney Disease: A complication of lupus nephritis, late-stage kidney disease can cause a metallic taste due to toxin buildup.
- Sjögren’s Syndrome: This autoimmune disease related to lupus can cause dry mouth, leading to a metallic or bitter taste.

If experiencing these symptoms, it's important to discuss them with a healthcare provider.

I get that metal taste too also happens with mist sodas, unsweetened tea, food with tomato sauces which are one of my weaknesses. Also with certain breads. Lucky Hawaii’s and sweet cornbread, jalapeño cornbread, multi grain breads are ok! Dark and sour dough breads now taste awful. Also only real butter tastes good I was an old fake butter in tub fan (what I was raised on) but then it no longer had any taste at all, no matter what brand I tried., but real butter has flavor. I’ve quit drinking Dr.Peppers which should get me kicked out of Texas as it has a horrible after taste. So yes it caused at least my taste buds to change. Some to metal some to dust! And some to not pick up on flavors st all. Oh yes I forgot. I’m very sensitive to all but the smallest use of salt but pepper I can drink from the shaker
